Costume Policy

Fan Fest has developed the following cosplay policy guidelines to help everyone get the most enjoyment from the cosplay experience as possible. These policies are intended to assist cosplayers in developing costume ideas that allow them to showcase their talents while ensuring the safety of everyone at our events.

Costume Policies




Costume Rules

  • Respect for All
    • If you feel that you are being harassed, or see someone else being harassed, please locate a member of our crew, security personnel, or local police department officer right away.
  • Family Friendly
    • Fan Fest is all ages and family friendly unless otherwise indicated. Costumes, cosplay, and “acting the part” are encouraged but please be aware of the people around you, especially when children are present.
    • Fan Fest abides by state laws for nudity and indecent exposure,
    • Inappropriate costumes or actions may result in a request from our staff to change aspects of your costume or removal from the event.
  • Misc rules
    • Shoes are required to be worn while in convention space. You may remove your shoes for photos if desired, but they must be replaced directly after the photo is taken.
    • Roller Skates/Blades or other wheeled items such as skateboards and hoverboards may not be worn/used in convention space.
    • Depictions of hate symbols are not allowed and will be asked to be removed.
    • If your costume has pieces such as wings, spikes, armor, etc. that extend well beyond your person, or you are carrying a large prop, please be aware of your surroundings and of people around you. You may be asked to change your costume or remove your prop from convention space if it is found to be unwieldy, disruptive, or dangerous.
    • Please do not block doorways, walkways, or exits with your costume, props, or costume pieces.



Helmets, Masks, and Facepaint



  • If your costume includes any item that covers or partially covers the face, especially if it is not easily removed, upon request, you may be asked for ID and/or additional information by security. Please be sure to keep your ID on you.
  • Helmets, masks, and hoods should not severely limit or impair the wearer’s ability to see. If your costume includes an eyeless hood or other face covering, considering bringing a friend to act as your “handler” and guide you through crowded spaces.
Costume Checkpoint


  • Metal Detectors, Metal detecting wands, bag checks, police presence, and enhanced security procedures will be in effect at all entrance points.
  • If you are wearing a Costume please allow additional time to get through the security checkpoint. There will be a dedicated line for cosplayers.
  • All costumes, props, and weapons must be inspected at the Costume & Prop Checkpoint, located prior to the security entrance.
  • Any prop that is not allowed will be required to be returned to your vehicle.
  • Props and weapons will be inspected and tagged by Law Enforcement and/or security. Anyone with an untagged prop will be escorted to the Costume & Prop Checkpoint.
  • Failure to comply with Costume Rules, Checkpoint procedures, or requests from official Square Egg Entertainment staff, security personnel, or local police officials will result in revocation of your credentials and removal from the event.

Fan Fest and its contractors are not responsible for loss, damage, or theft of any private property including costumes, props, weapons, masks, or helmets. If you do not want to have your costume props inspected or tagged, or if you are not willing to comply with these policies, please leave costumes, props, and weapons at home. All costume props and weapons must be inspected at the Costume & Prop Checkpoint.


Harassment and Discrimination



Fan Fest is firmly committed to providing a positive experience free of discrimination and bias. Each attendee is personally responsible for maintaining such an environment. Fan Fest prohibits any actions, words, jokes, or comments based on an individual’s race, sex, sexual preferences, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnic background, age, religion, physical condition, or other legally protected characteristic. Any conduct or action, whether overt or subtle, which creates an offensive or hostile environment is prohibited and will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action.

Fan Fest prohibits any harassment between volunteers, attendees, or guests. No person should be subjected to unsolicited or unwelcome sexual overtones and conduct, either verbal or physical. Misconduct applies to both males and females and includes harassment between individuals of both sexes and the same sex. Any person who believes he or she is a victim of sexual or discriminatory harassment is encouraged to let the harasser know that his or her behavior is unwelcome. In addition, those who believe they have been harassed should immediately report the matter to Convention Security, Police or Fan Fest Staff.


Prop and Weapons Policy

Excessive Weight & Size of Props
  • Heavy or oversized props can be dangerous for event-goers. Heavy or oversized props must be easily stored in crowded areas. At certain times when the exhibit hall is overcrowded, those with oversized costumes or props may be asked to exit the exhibit hall area temporarily.
  • If your props become unwieldy or threaten the safety and enjoyment of other people, you may be asked to remove this prop from the venue.
  • Failure to comply with requests to remove offending props may result in revocation of your badge and removal from the premises.
Allowed Props
  • Props and Weapons easily distinguishable from any real weapon other than firearms may be allowed upon thorough inspection. (the less realistic the better)
  • At the discretion of law enforcement, Convention center staff, on-site security staff and/or Square Egg Employees the following may be permitted however, we reserve the right to refuse any prop at any time.
    • All props (except those that resemble firearms) made from Plastic, Thermo Plastic, Urethane Resin, Cardboard, Foam, Foam Rubber, or other lightweight material
    • Plastic, Fiberglass or Resin shields with no sharp edges
    • Bows that are not strung and incapable of shooting arrows
    • Arrows in a quiver that are not removable or have the tips removed
    • Staffs and brooms made of Plastic, Resin, cardboard, foam, or foam rubber that are not unwieldy to the carrier
    • Lightsabers
    • Wands
    • Sonic screwdrivers
Prohibited Items
  • The following props and accessories are not permitted at Fan Fest
    • Firearms of any kind regardless of whether it has been emptied, disabled, or otherwise incapacitated, including but not limited to real and replica
      • BB guns
      • cap guns

      • water guns

      • airsoft guns
      • Toy guns
      • Blasters
      • Any other real or replica weapon that resembles a firearm
    • Tasers
    • Glass Props
    • Stone Props
    • Chainsaws or other gas-powered props
    • Bladed metal or solid (heavy) wooden weapons, including but not limited to
      • Axes
      • Daggers
      • Hatchets
      • Knives
      • Swords
      • pocket blades
      • ninja stars
      • metal or wooden shields
      • strung bows
      • bladed or sharp arrows
      • Flails
      • Power and garden tools
      • Claws
    • Real, replica, or simulated explosives, ammunition, and chemical weapons of any kind, including but not limited to
